Mason Crest Publishers brings unique books to young adults and older with mission to build understanding and tolerance

Educational Publisher Mason Crest announces the creation of a pioneering series of books geared toward young adult students and older and focusing on a variety of topics surrounding gay lifestyle. The Gallup's Modern Guide to Gay, Lesbian & Transgender Life will be available fall 2010. The series presents gay lifestyle in a positive tone as an accepted way of life, not as an "issue". The 15 books comprising the series examine gay lifestyles, positive role models, and supportive communities. The series also covers the social and political stigma that gay people still face.

Dr. James T. Sears, former professor who has taught at Harvard, Penn State, and other universities, lectured author of 20 books, and international expert in the field of gay and lesbian studies and education, is the noted senior consulting editor on the series. He brings 27 years of vast experience on gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender studies to the books, including founding editor of the Journal of LGBT Youth.

"Schools are here to educate and to do that properly, we must provide comprehensive information to students," said Sears. "Currently we are miseducating kids by providing a hetero-centric learning environment. We teach everything from a 'straight' perspective, fearing discussing alternative sexual details of history, literature, science, etc. will pollute the educational setting. By opening up the learning environment to include a LGBT perspective we can allow kids of all sexual and gender orientations to gain a greater acceptance for peer differences."

Mason Crest Publishers is at the forefront of societal issues; drug education, African American studies, mental disorders, etc. The company's mission is to understand what subjects are under-published and then produce educational books that fully cover all aspects of those topics. Gay, lesbian and transgender lifestyle is on the top of that list.

"Forty years ago, homosexuality was considered a psychological disorder," said Philip Cohen, CEO of Mason Crest. "Today it's becoming an accepted part of our society, no longer something hidden and taboo. Homosexuality has come out of the closet and we are proud to be the pioneers of this new series to educate young adults in a positive tone."

This series of books is aimed toward the pre-teen and early teenage group of both homosexual and heterosexual tweens. It confronts the issues honestly, sympathetically, and without bias, offering young adults, whatever their sexual orientation, the necessary facts to build understanding and tolerance. That being said, discrimination, bullying and rejection are still very real issues facing today's homosexual tweens. According to a National School Climate Survey conducted by The Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network (GLSEN), 86.2% of LGBT students report being verbally harassed because of their sexual orientation.

"One fact about bullying that is often overlooked is that there must not only be a bully and a victim--but onlookers," said Dr. Sears. "It is those who gaze on the bullying that fuels the bully to act. By teaching young people in all three of these groups that gender and sexuality cover a spectrum of expression, we extinguish the notion of difference or 'queerness' that fuels bigotry, intolerance, and hatred. Books in this series will allow educators to work with all the kids; onlookers, bullies and victims to create a larger sense of acceptance of sexual orientation."

The Gallup's Modern Guide to Gay, Lesbian & Transgender Life focuses on empowerment and encourages young adults to take control of their own lives. It brings all the facts to students in hopes that increased education on the subject will result in a greater acceptance of gay, lesbian and transgender tweens. The titles in the series are:

  1. Being Gay, Staying Healthy
  2. Coming Out: Telling Family and Friends
  3. Feeling Wrong in Your Own Body: Understanding What It Means to Be Transgender
  4. Gay and Lesbian Role Models
