• Annual event moves to Sacramento`s scenic Capitol Mall in 2010
Jan. 21, 2010, SACRAMENTO—The Sacramento Gay & Lesbian Center has contracted with Outword Magazine and its publisher, Fred Palmer, as the sales and marketing agent for Sacramento Pride 2010.
The Sacramento Pride parade and day-long festival, which are produced by and support the programs and services of the non-profit Sacramento Gay & Lesbian Center, are scheduled for Saturday, June 19.
The gay pride celebration, which attracts some 10,000 visitors from throughout California, has been held annually in Sacramento since 1984, originally under the name Freedom Fair. For the first time this year, Sacramento Pride will be held at Sacramento’s scenic Capitol Mall.
Palmer’s assignment as sales and marketing agent is part of an intensive marketing and branding campaign for Sacramento Pride as “California’s Capital Pride.” The campaign includes a month-long schedule of “Official Pride Month” events designed to give host businesses and non-profit organizations an opportunity to showcase their venues, products or services while demonstrating support for the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community.
Sacramento Pride has also unveiled a new logo and graphic “look” for 2010, along with a redesigned Website. Logo and web design were donated by Uptown Studios, a corporate sponsor of Sacramento Pride.
Corporate sponsors to date include Wells Fargo, Rainbow Chamber of Commerce of Sacramento, The Hewlett Packard Company and Outword Magazine.
Palmer said the move to Capitol Mall already has generated excitement and interest and is expected to increase attendance at the June 19 festival, which will feature live entertainment on multiple stages, a kid zone and carnival, Beer Garden, and more than 200 exhibitors and food vendors. Beer and wine will be served throughout the festival this year, while hard liquor will be confined to the Beer Garden.
The city of Sacramento is supportive of the move to Capitol Mall. Sacramento Pride Committee Chair and business owner Josh Jacoby has worked closely with city officials to develop logistical plans for festival infrastructure and security. City Councilmember Ray Tretheway, who represents Downtown Sacramento, said holding the festival at Capitol Mall supports the city’s goal bringing people and vitality to the downtown area.
“Sacramento’s LGBT community is essential to making this city a great place to live, work and play,” said Councilmember Tretheway. “The State Capitol and Tower Bridge will be the perfect backdrop as thousands of people from throughout the state and nation gather to celebrate our capital’s annual pride festival.”
